About this program
What this program is
HAEA’s Skill Empowerment programs treat education as more than academics. Students in Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar migrant communities build practical, creative, and physical skills alongside their classroom learning, through partnerships in each community.
On Koh Tao, students take swimming lessons through partner Koh Tao Swim, building confidence and water safety on an island where swimming is a practical life skill. Students who progress further can pursue sponsored scuba certification with partner Mojo Divers, including the cost of the certification course.
Alongside swimming and diving, volunteers lead arts and crafts sessions for creativity and self-expression, digital literacy instruction covering computer skills and safe navigation online, and photography classes in visual storytelling. Sessions run in person at Wonderland Jungle Hostel on Koh Tao or over Zoom for students further afield.

Delivery format
In-person sessions at Wonderland Jungle Hostel on Koh Tao, paired with Zoom classes for students in Malaysia and Myanmar migrant communities who cannot attend in person.
Who teaches
Partner instructors from Koh Tao Swim and Mojo Divers lead swimming and scuba sessions. HAEA volunteers lead arts and crafts, digital literacy, and photography classes.
Who attends
Students from Thailand, Malaysia, and Myanmar migrant communities who want to build skills beyond the standard curriculum, from a first swim stroke to open-water scuba certification.
