Skill Empowerment

Swimming, scuba certification, arts, photography, and digital literacy — skill-building for students in Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand, delivered in person and over Zoom.

HAEA’s Skill Empowerment programs treat education as more than academics. Students in Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand build practical, creative, and physical skills through in-person sessions and Zoom classes, delivered through partnerships in each community.

In Koh Tao, students take swimming lessons through partner Koh Tao Swim, building confidence and water safety on an island where swimming is a practical life skill. Students who progress further can pursue sponsored scuba certification with Mojo Divers — Vanisa and Wak Jenny, two Orang Asli students from Malaysia’s Semai community, completed their first SSI Bubble Maker course with Mojo Divers as part of a wider educational trip to Koh Tao, trying open water for the first time.

Alongside swimming and diving, volunteers lead arts and crafts sessions for creativity and self-expression, digital literacy instruction covering computer skills and safe digital navigation, and photography classes in visual storytelling — all free, run in person at Wonderland Jungle Hostel or over Zoom for students further afield.
