The partnership goes back to at least February 2023, when HAEA announced the start of ESL classes for Myanmar children in Thailand using Wonderland’s space and its own staff and guests as instructors. It has run weekly since, with volunteer teachers like Maroezka Williams, who brought over 20 years of hospitality and tourism experience to the classroom, leading sessions for students from Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.

Two organizations, one mission

Living proof: two students, one dormitory

She has also become a volunteer ESL teacher herself, leading English sessions for younger Myanmar students and, separately, for Myanmar workers transitioning into hospitality careers, a circle HAEA describes as turning a student into a community teacher.

Cherry is one of two students currently living at the hostel while completing their GED, the other is Vanisa, an Orang Asli student from Pos Woh, Malaysia. Their presence is the most direct answer to “where does the money go”: into a room on Koh Tao where a student studies for an exam that opens doors to further education.

Why direct booking is part of the model

None of this is presented as charity for its own sake. A guest who books directly isn’t asked to feel sorry for anyone, they’re asked to make a choice that funds a program already proven to run every week, with real students and real volunteers, on the same island they’re about to visit. Booking a bed, teaching a class, and donating monthly are three versions of the same action: keeping a functioning program funded.
