At the Horizon Asia Educational Association (HAEA), a volunteer-driven initiative committed to empowering underserved communities through education, we are incredibly fortunate to work with dedicated volunteers who are helping our students succeed. One of these exceptional individuals is Maria (Magui) do Canto, whose diverse background and passion for teaching have greatly enriched our educational programs, including our Global Mentorship Program.

A Unique Approach to Education

Magui brings a unique combination of skills to her teaching, drawing from her background in interior design, theatre, and the arts. She has been teaching ESL tutoring, arts, and computer skills to students from Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Her lessons are infused with creativity, making learning accessible and engaging for students from diverse backgrounds.

Fostering Creativity and Critical Thinking

Magui’s teaching goes beyond the basics, encouraging students to:

  • Think critically and express themselves creatively
  • Explore English as a Second Language (ESL), technology, and design
  • Engage in a fun, interactive, and confidence-boosting learning environment

Her dedication has opened up new opportunities for her students, empowering them to pursue their passions and develop essential skills for their futures.

Promoting Cultural Awareness and Human Rights

A passionate traveler herself, Magui brings a global perspective to her teaching. She fosters cultural awareness and incorporates human rights workshops, encouraging students to appreciate global diversity and embrace new perspectives. Her enthusiasm for exploring different cultures shines through in her lessons, helping students broaden their worldviews.

The Lasting Impact of Magui’s Work

Magui’s contribution to HAEA has been transformative. Her students have:

  • Discovered their talents in the arts and technology
  • Built valuable skills in ESL, computer literacy, and creative expression
  • Gained the confidence they need to succeed in their future endeavors

Her work is a true reflection of HAEA’s mission—to empower students through education and open doors to new opportunities.
